A week or so after Moogle was born; she had to get her ears pierced, so that we could give her an ear tag. These tags are very important because they help us to tell all of the babies apart, and they carry information that we need to know about each calf- their name, their I.D. #, and their birthday, as well as their mom’s name and I.D. #, and their dad’s name. We give the heifers (girls) green tags, and the bulls (boys) red tags. We started by giving her a temporary, hand-written tag, but today we put in her permanent, printed tags from the Holstein Association, were she has an official pedigree. These are pictures of Moogle with her temporary tags, and her permanent tags right after they were put in. It isn’t very painful for a cow to get her ears pierced, but it is a little uncomfortable at first. As you can see from the photo, Moogle is feeling a little shy. Come on out to the farm for a tour this spring and you can see little Moogle in person. She is going to be seeing a lot of school children on their spring field trips over the next few weeks.
